Decorated in a style reminiscent of a Czech apartment from the 1960s, London’s Lounge Bohemia is a cocktail bar with a twist. Each drink is served with its own colourful story and many draw on scientific techniques, including, for instance, being turned into edible alcoholic cotton. Even the glasses look like something out of a mad professor’s laboratory. Lounge Bohemia is every inch the creation of Czech Pavel Tvaroh, who has been running the basement bar for more than a decade. When we spoke there I asked Tvaroh about its “molecular mixology”
A real Czech pig-killing, beef belly with celery puree and black potatoes, summer fettuccine with calamari and marinated carp with horseradish-dill sauce – all of this can be savoured by visitors to the Festival of Taste food fair now on in Brno. In addition, they can enjoy a variety of goodies from cheeses and pâtés to chocolates.
Masopust celebrations have been held in various parts of Prague. The annual
carnival in which many people dress up in masks and costumes was marked on
Saturday in districts including Letná and Karlín. Next week the Mardi
Gras-like celebrations will take place in Malá Strana, Žižkov and other
parts of the city.
Masopust has traditionally occurred between the Epiphany (January 6) and Ash Wednesday, when the pre-Easter Lenten period begins.
A hat made in honour of Jiří Raška, the 1968 Olympics ski jumping champion, that is the highlight of the 2018 Winter Olympic collection, is reported to be hugely successful. With just over two weeks to go to the start of the Winter Olympics in South Korea the hat is sold out and Alpine Pro, the company that produced the Czech Olympics outfit, is scrambling to put several thousand more pieces on the market ahead of the games.

Jan Došlý, marketing Director of Alpine Pro said the hat was practically sold out and the company was scrambling to put several thousand more pieces on the market ahead of the games. The hat dubbed “Raškovka” closely resembles the hat in which Raška won his first gold in ski jumping at the Olympics in Grenoble in 1968. Jiří Raška was named the best Czech skier of the 20th century in a 2003 poll of journalists and members of the Czech Ski Association.
Twenty-five years since the Czech and Slovak republics split in the Velvet Divorce, both continue to share remarkably close ties. Not surprisingly, tourism plays a key role, with Czech visitors, for example, making up for more than a third of foreign tourists in Slovakia a year. While the Czech Republic may have the edge in the number of castles and chateaux, sites such as the Tatra Mountains or Slovak Paradise remain major draws for Czechs.
The population of the Czech Republic grew by 18,700 in the first three
quarters of 2017, according to official figures released on Tuesday. The
country’s population stood at 10,597,500 at the end of September. The
rise has been mainly attributed to immigration, in particular from Ukraine,
Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.
The number of births in the Czech Republic in the first nine months of the year was very slightly down on the same period in 2016, while the number of marriages grew. Thirty was the most popular age for men to marry, compared to 27 for women.
Despite the annual Christmas carp sales, consumption of fish in the Czech
Republic keeps stagnating. According to the data of the Czech Statistical
Office, Czechs consumed 5.1kilos of fish per person last year, which was a
drop by 7.5 percent on the previous year and also the lowest figure since
Fish consumption in the Czech Republic remains to be one of the lowest in the European Union, where it amounts to around 11 kilograms per head. The amount recommended by the WHO is 17 kilograms of fish per head.
